Colin Sutton (Jerry Scheff) Back to Profiles

Colin was born in 1977, the year that Elvis died, and has always respected his music and the talent of the band members. At the age of 14 he started playing the bass guitar. He played heavy rock in pubs and sometimes jazz in wine bars. He was taught by local jazz legend Michael Spearman (guitarist). His introduction to free-improvisation came at the hands of the always-slightly-distracted veteran of the London free scene Mick Brannon.

At the moment he is the bass guitar tutor on the BA (hons) pop music course at Leeds college of music and is involved in BBC TV Session work in Songs of Praise. In the past he has played in the official production of “Return to the Forbidden planet” and was a founder member of the very successful touring theatre show The Karpenters. He also has a masters degree in jazz studies.

Colin will be playing a replica black Fender Precision bass guitar in the show, in the exact style of Jerry, which was fast, ferocious and more than a little crazy. Again he was the only player who could move his hands fast enough over the strings to even come close to the original. He is a complete legend on the bass guitar and is a joy to watch.

Colin has studied the way that Gerry stood, the way he held his guitar and his style of playing, then rehearsed it until perfect. He makes it look easy – but just watch his fingers move across the strings and ask yourself ….how does he do that!?

You can really hear the true talent of Colin in songs like “Fever” and “An American Trilogy”. The likeness to the original sound of Gerry Scheff is just breath-taking.
